Facility Status: Operations Suspended / No Longer Listed as an Active BOP Facility
FCI Terminal Island was a federal correctional institution for male inmates located in the Los Angeles Harbor area near San Pedro, California. The Federal Bureau of Prisons suspended operations at the facility in November 2025 after serious infrastructure problems raised safety concerns. People who were still serving federal sentences were transferred to other BOP facilities.

A future release date does not mean that a person is currently housed at Terminal Island. Because operations at FCI Terminal Island were suspended, individuals who remained in federal custody were transferred to other locations.
How to Read the Inmate Records
Released On — indicates a recorded release date in the historical inmate record.
Release Date — indicates a projected or reported release date. Federal release dates can change because of sentence recalculations, earned time credits, court actions, transfers, or other changes to an inmate’s sentence or custody status.
BOP Register Number — the identification number used by the Federal Bureau of Prisons for an individual federal inmate. It can be useful when verifying a record through the official BOP Inmate Locator.
Important: The Federal Bureau of Prisons states that its online inmate locator generally contains records for federal inmates incarcerated from 1982 to the present. Older historical prisoners may not appear in the online BOP database.
Was FCI Terminal Island Closed?
The Bureau of Prisons suspended operations at FCI Terminal Island in November 2025 after structural problems were identified in the aging facility. Inmates who were still serving sentences were moved to other federal institutions. If the Release Date field indicates “UNKNOWN”, the inmate’s confinement term is not determined (e.g. he or she may be in pretrial status, has not yet been sentenced, is being held due to a civil commitment, etc.)

Of Course everything is relative and that’s especially true in the BOP, as I’m sure you know (or so it sounds like). In our experience, and from everything we’ve gathered from multiple sources that have been in, or still are in, FCI Terminal Island, it’s not a bad place to do time with offenses that otherwise are problematic in the institutional setting. That said, we understand it’s never an easy thing to endure and hope we didn’t mislead. Please remember that all of our institutional missives have been written (in EVERY case) by a current or former inmate at each facility.
