Description of FCI OxfordThe medium-security Federal Correctional Institution and minimum-security camp in Oxford are located about 60 miles north of Madison. A large part of the population from each prison comes from the Chicago area. To discourage attempts at escape, coils of razor wire separate and cap the fences, along with electronic sensor wires woven through the fence. To ensure that no one is getting out of Oxford prematurely, guards drive around the perimeter of the prison 24-hours each day. The prison is very secure.
The minimum-security camp, on the other hand, is an open institution. There are no perimeter fences of any consequence. Many of the prisoners at Oxford camp work on job details or participate in programs that keep them in regular contact with the community. The men in Oxford camp, for the most part, were convicted after federal criminal indictment for nonviolent crime. The administrators do not consider those prisoners a threat to society. Prisoners in the camp, for the most part, are well-behaved and respectful.
