Inmate Death at USP Marion

WASHINGTON, D.C.: On Wednesday, July29, 2020, inmate Taiwan Davistested positive for COVID-19 at the United States Penitentiary (USP) Marion, in Marion, Illinois. On Saturday, August 1,2020, hewas evaluated by institutional medical staffand was transported to a local hospital for further treatmentand evaluation. On Wednesday, August 5, 2020, Mr. Davis, who had pre-existing medical conditions, whichthe CDC lists asrisk factors for developing more severe COVID-19 disease, was pronounced dead by hospital staff.
Mr. Davis was a 39-year-old male who was sentenced inthe Southern District of Illinois to an84-month sentence for Distribution of a Controlled Substance.He had been in custody at USP Marion since December 18, 2019.
USP Marion is a Medium security facility that currently houses 1,216male offenders.
