Federal Inmate Register Number Codes

Did you know the United States Marshals Service and the Federal Bureau of Prisons assign register numbers to federal prisoners? These numbers are important for loved ones to know if they want to visit an inmate or send money or mail to an inmate.

These eight-digit codes follow this format: XXXXX-OXX.

While the first five numbers in the register number are unique, the last 3 indicate the district where the offender was arrested and or processed into the federal correctional system.

Below are the different codes for the various district locations.

If you aren’t sure what an inmate’s register number is, you can always find it on the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ website on the Find an Inmate page. Click the “Find by Name” tab to perform a search by name. You will also require the race, sex and age of the inmate.

  1. I have visited several prisoners as a PVS visitor and the last 3 digits start with 1. These numbers aren’t listed here. I am guessing that -171 would mean South Carolina because of the 71, but what does the 1 mean?

  2. It means that there were so many that the last one was 99999-071. Then it rolled over to 00001-171. It will keep repeating with XXXXX-271 and so on.

  3. That means during covid they were put into another court to be processed that is not their court in the district they should have been in.

  4. On your website, at the link below, you provide the 3 digit ending numbers for the different districts

However, recently, I have seen U.S. Marshal numbers ending in 506, 509 & 510 for Los Angeles and New York which do not fit the normal numbering pattern on the link above.

    For example,

Ghislaine Maxwell, case out of NY, (Epstein girlfriend) Reg. # 02879-509

Dr. Darius Paduch, case out of NY Reg # 53470-510 just arrested last week. His case is in Southern District of New York and he was arrested Southern District of New York.
Why doesn’t his Reg # end in -054?

Do you know what 509 and 510 are for?

    • The federal judicial district/USMS district numbers all begin with zero. However, in some cases, inmates’ register numbers include a three-digit suffix that starts with something other than a zero (380, 480, or 509, for example.) In this case, the last two digits identify the court district, but the first number is unique to the individual inmate.

    • Steve you’re right on the money. Because I have a friend who was sentenced 2 weeks ago out of EDNY, Islip & he was given a 509 #.
